MANILA, Philippines — Song Seung-heon will return as the lead in the second season of the South Korean crime-solving drama series “The Player 2: King of Swindlers.”
FILSTAR We sent a series of questions to Son and his new co-star Oh Yeon Seo, and they chose a few to answer.
The two actors began by expressing their joy at being cast in the latest season of “The Player,” which tells the story of a group of previously unrelated characters who decide to work together to solve a loan shark crime.
“We were able to produce Season 2 thanks to the love of our viewers. I am very proud and grateful. First of all, what remains the same between Season 1 and Season 2 is that Hari brings all the players together to punish the bad guys. Unlike Season 1, his life has changed 180 degrees with the death of his father, and he now decides to take revenge,” said Song.
Song plays Kang Ha-ri, a veteran con artist who comes from a family of investigators and is the leader of the crime-solving team.
He describes Hari as “a charismatic individual who displays compassionate leadership in leading his team. On the outside he appears cheerful and witty, but on the inside he is filled with a desire for revenge and becomes a completely different person, ruthless, once he starts executing his plans.”
Song said the latter makes Ha-ri a fascinating character.
Yeong-seo will join Hari in the upcoming season and admitted she is fascinated by the prospect of acting alongside Hari, who she only saw on TV as a child. She will play Hari's assistant, Su-min.
“I used to watch Song on TV when I was a child and he has been like a star to me ever since. I feel so honoured and enchanted just by the fact that I will be working with him on a project,” the actress said.
She said she loved the drama genre and read the script like a fangirl. Yeon-seo said she loved her character, Su-min, but at the same time, she felt scared and challenged to play the character.
“I thought a lot about how I should interact with the other actors and what kind of person Su-min should be. From the first day of filming, all the actors created a fun atmosphere on set, so I was able to get into the role in a good mood,” she said.
She learned a few things from her co-stars, especially her lead co-star Song.
“When we worked together on set, I was really touched to see how attentive and considerate he was to those around him. Seeing how well he always treated the other actors and staff, I decided to do the same from now on,” the actress said.
Meanwhile, Song spoke about his experience welcoming Yeong-seo and another new cast member, Jang Gyuri.
Gyuri will play Cha Jae-yi, the younger sister of Cha Ah-ryun, who was played by Krystal in Season 1. Like her sister, she is also a talented driver who joins the team.
“In a short amount of time, I also became close with new members Oh Yeon Seo and Jang Gyuri. The bickering chemistry between all of us was so good that we were discussing how great it would be if there was a sequel up to season 10,” the actor said.
Song will be reprising his role from the previous season alongside Lee Si-eun and Tae Won-seok, who played a hacker and a fighter, respectively.
Director Song said, “I worked with Lee Si-eun and Tae Won-seok before and we were very close, so it felt more comfortable and natural to work together again this time after a long time.”
