This week on the podcast we have a true giant of British alternative music, the one and only Graham Coxon. From being a quarter of Blur to one half of The Wave to working as a solo artist, his illustrious career is one that stands the test of time and we're delighted to have him as our latest guest on Before They Knew Better.
As always with the podcast, we asked Graham to bring in some photos, objects and songs from his formative years, which led to a conversation that included digging up early memories of Blur, a visit to Colchester's Tribal pubs in the 80s and more details about Graham's squatter days…
“I had to be really careful which pubs I went into,” he says in the episode. “I don't think I could have gone into a soldier's pub dressed like I was – in an old tweed jacket that might smell like tar, corduroy trousers and probably hush puppies with grease paint splattered on them. There were a few pubs that only people like me could go to, and they had art students, hardcore punks, goths, non-mainstream people – all sorts of alternative people.”
Available now on Spotify, Apple, Amazon, YouTube and all other major podcast platforms, “Before They Knew Better” is a DIY podcast that delves into the early successes, struggles and surprises of your favorite musicians, with new episodes released every Tuesday morning.
