For this DIY, start by carefully measuring the combined length of your cabinet and mini-fridge. If you buy pre-cut wooden boards, you can leave a few inches between the cabinet and fridge, or let each end overhang a little to make the counter longer. It will still look good and function well. The depth of the storage cabinet should be small, and the width of the counter should roughly match the depth of the fridge. For a counter that is 28 to 30 inches wide, Katie Wisenbaker used three 5-foot-long boards, probably 1x8s and 2x10s. You will also need sandpaper, wood glue, ¾-inch wood screws, 4 to 6 two-hole metal brackets (about $4 each at Home Depot), small metal corner braces (about $12 for a pack of 20 at Home Depot), and a machine screwdriver or a drill with a screwdriver bit. For the finish, buy paint or wood stain.
If you want your cabinets to be a different color than your countertops, sand and paint the countertops before installing them. Sand the countertops, but don't stain or paint them until you've screwed them to the cabinet tops. Get a perfectly smooth surface with these woodworking hacks that help you sand evenly on any project. If you want the entire storage area to be one color, it's easier to paint all the surfaces once assembly is complete.
