Google appears to have further backed away from its AI Overview feature following understandable criticism that AI-generated answers are providing users with inaccurate, misleading and dangerous answers.
Let’s take a closer look at some new findings from two different SEO platforms.
- SEOClarity looked at 2,700 keywords.
- SERanking analyzed 100,000 keywords.
Reduced AI overview. Google is showing the AI Summary less frequently, but analysts are divided on how often. The AI Summary appears when:
- According to SERanking, it now accounts for 8.71% of searches (down from 64% when it was called Search Generative Experience).
- According to SEOClarity, that's 7.6% of searches (down from 17.4% from May 14-30).
The cuts aren't surprising, especially considering that Google responded to criticism by explaining how it was improving its AI overview on May 30.
Quote. According to SERanking, Reddit's visibility in AI Overview has decreased. Reddit is no longer in the top 10 most cited domains. The top 5 domains of most referenced websites in AI Overview are:
- runnersworld.com (1,200 views)
- healthline.com (1,114 reviews)
- linkedin.com (1,027 views)
- runrepeat.com (933 times)
- en.wikipedia.org (775 views)
Looking at the numbers. Some interesting findings from the SERanking analysis:
- 84.72% of AI summaries link at least one domain that also appears in the top 10 organic search results on Google.
- The probability that a featured snippet and an AI summary appear together is 45.39%. In this case, the probability that the quotes match is 61.79%.
- The average AI summary is 4,342 characters.
- Ads are shown with an AI summary 87% of the time.
- AI overviews are most prevalent in the human relations (26.62%), food and beverage (24.78%), and technology (18.11%) sectors.
Further discoveries. Other interesting findings from SEOClarity’s analysis include:
- AI Overview appeared on 44% of Your Money Your Life (YMYL) keywords.
- Local keywords do not trigger AI summaries (this seems consistent with recent BrightEdge findings).
- AI overviews are most prevalent in the home warranty (25.22%), technology (20.09%), and social media (23.96%) industries.
Why we care. While there were some issues in the early stages of AI Overview, Google continues to evolve in the direction of AI Overview. Google aims to be an answer engine, not a search engine. As the shift from traditional search to AI search continues, some brands and businesses may be forced to adapt to a new reality of less organic traffic.
