What are these people thinking?
Ever since the first automobile was sold, mankind has entertained the idea that they could improve beyond the factory options, and sometimes that's true. However, there are also examples where this idea has gone horribly wrong. Just when I was thinking that the excessive use of zip ties, JB Weld, and duct tape to secure cars was a bad idea, these cars came on my radar. I don't know if these people were trying to save on parts or if they truly thought they could modify their cars better beyond the factory or aftermarket parts, but when you look at these modifications you'll be left wondering, “What the hell did they make of this?”
Instant trailer hitch
I don't know what kind of car this is, but judging by the ground clearance, it might be some kind of crossover. The rear bumper has a lot of scratches, which makes me wonder what on earth this guy was doing with a wooden trailer hitch and (somehow) a ball attached to a towing device made of wood. Whatever you do, don't ride in the back while this guy has a towing device attached.
Kettle cold air intake
When you want a cold air intake but don't have time to search for the right filter, all you have to do is see what's in your trash can, right? Of all the questions we have about why and how it works, one we most want to know is, “Does my exhaust smell like popcorn?”
Unique bench seat
You probably won't be asking this friend for a ride again. When the driver of this car says it has a bench seat, it's probably not quite what you imagined.
I need to calm down somehow.
Here is one of several photos of window units being used on vehicles: One thing I have to point out is that all of these modified air conditioners seem a lot more complicated than repairing or replacing a vehicle's air conditioner: Hey window unit folks, what's going on?
Either way, that window is going to be down!
And then there are those who don't need air conditioning in their cars because they've found a way to beat the system and make their windows work without knobs. This must be a big blow to the window lever manufacturing industry. Is this the future of power windows?
Yes, we have spares!
This can't be real, and if it is, please everyone stay away from this lunatic. I've been around cars all my life and worked in the car industry all my adult life and I don't get too upset, but I am genuinely concerned about this trolley wheel.
Get on board, baby!
There is (I think) one of two things going on here – either this is a makeshift child car seat holder, or the hinge on the front seat has broken and this is what's holding the seat up. I hope it's the latter, but I don't understand the purpose of all this extra boards layered on top of the wooden frame and it makes me worry that it's not intended to support the front seat.
Is this really helpful?
Why not buy a BMW X5 luxury SUV and install a fake rear window wiper? There are no more rules. This “modification” is especially infuriating because a little wiping doesn't seem to improve visibility at all, and yet this guy is here with a broom head representing the BMW community.
Another snack food used in the engine bay
My daughter's social studies class is currently discussing reduce, reuse, and recycle, but I don't think this talk would be accepted in a 4th grade classroom. I should point out that this air duct “fix” involved not one, but two flavors of Pringles. Which is your favorite? Personally, I'm a Sour Cream and Onion person.
When you stop caring
Maybe the owner of this car is waiting for an insurance claim to be paid, or maybe they've just accepted the situation. When the side of a car is crushed and people are trying to stop gasping in horror at the ugly damage, all it takes is a literal bandaid! We've all seen bandaids on cars before and thought, “Hmm, that's kind of clever,” but this is a bit too much.
Could you please open the door?
I have to admire this guy for giving his inevitable kidnapping partner at least a chance to escape while driving down the road. This is the ultimate “wait for the beer” modification for passenger convenience.
When the idea of making this list came up during an editorial chat, I was really hoping to find some clever hacks, but I wasn't impressed. It was pretty funny, though. What's the worst car hack you've seen?
