Shocked shoppers are coming to terms with the long-established DIY store leaving the community after 30 years in business.
The store was a well-known retailer and part of a major home and garden company with 150 branches, but the landlord wants to take the site in a different direction.
Homebase has confirmed that it will close the curtains on its multi-generational store at Northampton's Riverside Retail Park on September 6.
The closure is understood to follow plans by the landlord to turn the site into two separate units, leaving the business saddened at being forced to vacate.
As well as gardening supplies, retailers offered a range of indoor furniture, paints, tools, ideas and advice.
Now the last branch in Northampton has been forced to sell all of its items in a closing down sale.
Real estate agent Angelica Busco posted on Facebook: “Store closures = big sales.”
“Are you thinking about renovating your home or just want a cool new lamp or flower pot? We've got everything for you, with prices ranging from 10% to 50% off.”
Homebase claims it was not struggling as a business, but was a victim of the site owner's schemes.
In Google reviews, shoppers praised the affordable prices.
“You can get almost anything delivered to your home here for a reasonable price,” one woman wrote.
Another said: “Brighten up your garden at an affordable price! Great news for gardening enthusiasts.”
A third added: “Amazing. Got this lovely tree just a few days before Christmas for a great price. Made my Christmas extra special.”
But other shoppers have also recently begun complaining about stock shortages.
“There's very little stock left,” Ian Davis said.
Steve Biggs agreed: “The selection isn't as good as it used to be. I used to shop here for the convenience, but now there are better options in town.”
The Northampton Chronicle previously reported that plans had been submitted to renovate the Home Base site into two units.
Home Base Farewell Northampton
It's unclear what will replace Home Base on the site.
It's bleak news for Northampton home base lovers.
The Riverside store was the last remaining retailer in the town after the Sixfields store closed in 2019.
There is currently just one Homebase in the whole of Northamptonshire, located at Abbey Retail Park in Daventry.
Other Homebase stores to have closed recently include Marsh Mills Retail Park in Plymouth (November), Southam Road in Banbury (November) and Finchley Road in London (December).
