A recent study found that Ector and Howard counties are ranked in the top 100 counties most at risk for hail damage this year.
ODESSA, Texas — Severe storm season is upon us, and the risk of hail damage is following suit.
Ector and Howard counties rank in the top 100 counties most at risk for hail damage this year, according to a recent study by Roof Gnome.
For those who don't have a garage or carport to store their car, thinking outside the box may be the answer.
“If there's a severe storm warning for that day, make sure you park your car near a building or somewhere that's partially covered and protected from the weather,” says Willie Valerio, owner of The Original Dent Shop in Odessa.
Valerio said people should avoid hiding under trees.
“Big, heavy blankets can be helpful, but if you're experiencing 30 mph winds, make sure you secure the blanket because it will blow away if you don't secure it,” Valerio said.
Dent repair shop owners said their customers are finding creative, yet safe, ways to protect their cars, such as covering them with styrofoam padding or tarps. Some are even using thick cardboard boxes.
“Some of these will protect the paint on the car, but they won't protect the metal,” Valerio says.
But if your car does suffer severe hail damage… “Contact your insurance company and get a written quote. This is the quickest way to start repairs when someone first contacts your insurance company,” says Valerio. “They'll walk you through the process, so when you go to the shop of your choice, you'll have all the paperwork and quote to hand. This is the smoothest and easiest way to process a claim.”
