You probably don't expect to hear this from a beauty editor, but I don't wear false lashes. I said so. To be honest, a lot of false lashes are a bit… Too False eyelashes don't suit me and I love messy makeup, so I can't be bothered to wear them most days. But recently, I decided to take the plunge and try applying my own false eyelash extensions, as they are designed to look more natural. I thought it would be worth a try. I might become a fake eyelash fanatic!
I gave them a try one night before an event, and it was a mixed blessing. Honestly, it was a bit of a faux pas. I knew I definitely needed some expert advice before trying it again. If you're struggling with at-home eyelash extensions like me, read on. I reached out to two experts for help.
How to properly apply eyelash extensions at home
Celebrity makeup artist Judy Gabbay and LashifyPro Director Beau Nelson shared some foolproof tips for applying lash extensions at home, and I took extensive notes to make it a smoother experience the next time I try this treatment.
1. Using a standing mirror: Both Gabbay and Nelson see this as key.
“The easiest way to apply your own makeup is to use a free-standing mirror and hold it up to your face,” says Gabbay.[This is so] Instead of looking straight into the mirror, look underneath, so you can actually see where you're going with your lashes.”
Nelson adds: “With a little practice, DIY eyelash extensions can easily be done at home. We recommend using a mirror like Lashify's LED Infinity Mirror to check underneath and position your lashes.”
2. Make sure there is no oil left in your eyes. “To make your eyeshadow last longer, make sure your eyes and lashes are free of oil. Use a prep product like Lashify's Pre-Cleanse Cleansing Water and apply it to your lashes with a brush or cotton pad. Women with extremely oily lids can find an eyeshadow primer useful,” says Nelson.
3. Note the join technique: Nelson says, “Make sure you use the right bonding technique — not too much, not too little. For maximum durability, I recommend applying very thin layers of Bondo. Applying three coats of Bondo, allowing a minute or two or more to dry in between, will keep the Bondo from peeling off. Over time, you'll learn which bonding technique and product works best with your eye chemistry.”
Four. Wait until the adhesive (or bonding material) is tacky before applying. Gabbay also recommends putting a bit of adhesive or bonding agent on your lashes before applying them: “This will make them a little less likely to fall off and help them stay in place better,” she says.
Five. Using tweezers: This may seem obvious, but it's worth noting here: Don't be fooled into thinking you can apply the lashes with your fingers, as they will not stick or adhere well if you do. Tweezers are also useful after you apply the lashes, as they can be used to gently pinch the lashes and further attach them to your regular lashes.
6. Using brush adhesive and tube adhesive: Gabbay says that once you're comfortable with applying eyelash extensions, you can apply them underneath your regular lashes instead of over them for a more natural look. “You can also use a brush-type adhesive instead of a tube-type adhesive, as this will be stickier and easier to apply underneath. [the lashes]”You don't have to wait for it to get sticky; it sticks right away,” she says.
7. It's all about placement: “Another tip for longer wear is placement: Don't place it right on the moisture line of your bottom lashes. Instead, place it 1-2 mm above it. It won't be visible from the front at all, and it will last days longer than if you place it closer.” Nelson
Eyelash extensions I tried: Kiss Falscara Special Edition Starter Kit

Falska La Special Edition Starter Kit
Honestly, this lash extension kit is amazing. I just didn't have the skill and know-how the first time I tried to apply them. I won't post pictures because it would be hilarious, but after applying a few, they looked really nice and natural. The glue dries quickly so you definitely need to work faster than me, but if you're a pro at applying false lashes, this kit might be easier for you.
I love that this kit comes with several different sizes of lashes and a remover so you can remove them whenever you want. If you're new to at-home lash extensions like me, it may take a few tries to get the hang of it, but otherwise, the kit is super easy to use. Once you get the hang of it, you'll love it because it's the most natural looking thing I've ever found. The brand says that it can be reused if you treat it with care and keep it clean. The kit also comes with a brush-on adhesive and sealing solution, so you don't need to use anything else or apply a separate lash glue, which is another big plus.
If you're looking to add a little volume, length and volume to your lashes but aren't a fan of strip-type false lashes, I think these are definitely worth a try. The false lashes look great and are easy to remove. Overall, I think this is a great product for $25.

“Lashify is my favorite lash extension brand. They are the originators of this technology and they have the best styles. My personal favorite style is the Fluffy Lite Gossamer Lashes, which give you super natural volume. They look like your own lashes, but better. The Plushy Gossamer Lashes are a beautiful curl for a more flattering volume style look. The Stardust Gossamer Lashes are slightly thinner and spikier lashes. This style is especially beautiful in chocolate color.” — Nelson
