Longtime Eels fans know that their records generally fall into one of two categories: uptempo, rowdy rock Eels and mellow, contemplative Eels. The title of their 15th studio album, “Eels Time!”, suggests the former, but it's actually closer to the latter. In fact, this album may be their softest sounding in a decade since 2014's handsome, self-deprecating “The Cautionary Tales of Mark Oliver Everett.” Frontman E is kinder to himself this time around, which may not be surprising considering the album was made the same year he underwent life-saving open-heart surgery. As expected, there are musings on death, particularly on the ghostly “We Won't See Her Like Again” and the gentle, anthemic “If I'm Gonna Go Anywhere.”
But if there's one major theme that runs through the album, it's the maturity that comes with middle age and, above all, love. E has mellowed considerably over the years, and even one of the album's rowdiest tracks, “Goldy,” is an ode to his pet goldfish. And that's most evident in simple, melodic love songs like “I Can't Believe It's True” and “Song for You Know Who,” which wouldn't be nearly as moving without the context that they're sung by the same man who stared into space on “Electro-Shock Blues.” “Eels Time!” is a bit monotonous, and more casual fans may miss the sonic variety of “Souljacker.” But those who love E at his most reflective will find a lot to like.
