This business tucked away in the North Valley is a DIYer's dream: Piles of wood salvaged from dead trees that were meant to be used for firewood are now available to make your DIY dreams come true.
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — A business tucked away in the North Valley is transforming piles of wood that would otherwise be used for firewood into a DIYer's dream.
The Cut and Dry Lumber Company has been around for a few years, but Dennis Baca has been cutting down old dead trees throughout the Albuquerque metropolitan area for 45 years.
“And for those 40 years, we've been providing wood for free. We've been cutting wood and giving it to people as firewood,” Baca said.
Someone asked if dead trees could be used as lumber for the city, and so Cut and Dry Lumber was born.
“Since we started this, we look at every piece of wood before we burn it and say, 'We can't burn that!'” he said. “All of this wood is made from trees that would have been cut down for other reasons. We don't cut down trees to make lumber per se. Trees are cut down because they're old, or they're dangerous, or they're in a bad place…whatever the reason.”
The trunks are dried in the sun, then cut into pieces and piled up to show someone what they can become.
Everything from shelves to tables to benches. It takes a lot of work and sanding to get there. Baca says they're here to help.
“We do as little or as much work as the customer wants, so if you pick out a board and it's too big for us to handle, we can cut it down, straighten it, flatten it, sand it and make it a finished product. We can make legs, we can do whatever you want,” Baca said.
