Gardening can be quite expensive, especially when you consider the fertilizers and products needed to keep plants alive.
But one woman has shared a low-cost trick that will get rid of weeds almost instantly.
Kate Ling, who goes by the username @yourmategingerkate, shared the hack with her 394,000 TikTok followers.
She said: “Stop spending a lot of money on toxic herbicides because we will soon have non-toxic ones.”
The 42-year-old said all you need is an empty spray bottle, white vinegar, table salt and dish soap.
Even better, the solution costs less than a pound, so you won't have to spend a fortune, and if you also have pets, the homemade mixture shouldn't be a problem compared to using toxic commercial weed killers.
In the video, the mom squeezes dish soap into a spray bottle, then adds salt and vinegar.
Even though the DIY solution doesn't measure out the products, she suggested just eyeballing it.
Kate mixes the ingredients together and sprays the bottled mixture over the areas where the weeds are growing.
Salt appears to be a great natural solution to toxic herbicides. This compound works by increasing ionic concentrations and osmotic pressure in the soil.
This will cause the weeds to absorb the salt instead of the water and dry out.
White vinegar, on the other hand, removes moisture and its acidity breaks down plant cell walls.
Finally, the dish soap acts as a glue to help the salt and vinegar stick to the weeds, improving the formula.
Just be careful not to spray the mixture on plants you don't want to kill. Kate's video has been viewed over 92,000 times to date.
TikTok users took to the videos to share their thoughts on the gardening hack, with one writing: “Buying white vinegar in the store is a nightmare these days. All they have is distilled malt vinegar and my mum bought that because she didn't know malt could be white. To be honest I didn't know either until that day.”
A second person commented: “I've been doing this for years and it really works Kate. Use this to clean your washing machine and it gets rid of odours and stains. Vinegar and baking soda also works in drains. Hang on, I think I might start my own TikTok.”
“Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge with us,” a third commented.
Another person shared their own advice: “Boiling water always works.”
A fifth said: “Amazing, Kate, thank you,” while another added: “This is what I do, I have too many animals to even think about using other species.”
Finally, one user commented: “It's amazing and I use it all the time.”
