We're more than halfway through the second series of Before They Knew Better (a podcast that turns back the clock to explore the times before your favourite musicians became famous), and so far guests have included CMAT, Ryan and Gary German from The Cribs, Lauren Mayberry from Chvrches, and Bill Ryder-Jones.
This week's guest is Kate Nash, one of Myspace's first truly self-made stars. She talked about how as a child she collected thimbles, went to the BRIT School, and dreamed of becoming a pop star. She'll also tell us about her whirlwind rise to fame and what it was like being in the middle of the media frenzy of the mid-2000s.
“I came in through Myspace. It was just a moment in our history, and I think it was the most free and cool time,” she says of her music industry roots on the podcast. “Because it was really teenagers who were in charge. It was kids who were like, 'I love this!' They were just picking what they wanted to listen to, and nobody was coaching them. And I think that's so exciting. It was two years of pure freedom, and I think I just walked through that gate.”
Available now on Spotify, Apple, Amazon, YouTube and all other major podcast platforms, “Before They Knew Better” is a DIY podcast that delves into the early successes, struggles and surprises of your favorite musicians, with new episodes released every Tuesday morning.
