MANILA, Philippines — It was a Saturday to remember for Alex, one of MR.DIY's employee volunteers, who had long been looking for an opportunity to teach young people.
For him, it is fulfilling to see students make a real connection with the Teacher for a Day project, understand what they are doing and learn from it.
Meanwhile, employee volunteer Claire said that participating in teaching the children felt like a gift because witnessing the children's gratitude and selfless attitude reminded her to be grateful for all the blessings she has received.
Like Alex and Claire, 16 other employee volunteers from home improvement retailer MR.DIY also collaborated with World Vision International to empower youth through their Brigada Pagbasa program held recently at Baseco Compound, Manila.
As an integral part of MR.DIY’s comprehensive corporate social responsibility program, Acts of Kindness (AOK), the partnership with World Vision is rooted in one of AOK’s core pillars – youth and education – and recognises the importance of education in providing children with a brighter future.
A total of 34 students from grades 4 to 7 at Senator Benigno Aquino Elementary School participated in the program aimed at improving their literacy skills. These students have now completed all 16 sessions of the Brigada Pagbasa program and will be undergoing a post-test to assess their progress.
Charles Salesina, vice president of marketing for MR.DIY Philippines, reiterated the company's commitment to educating young people.
He stressed the enduring importance of education as an invaluable gift and assured MR.DIY’s readiness to improve students’ comprehension skills. He also stressed the importance of reading as a fundamental skill for the future.
Launched by the Department of Education, Brigada Pagbasa is an after-school reading intervention platform that partners with local stakeholders to improve students’ reading skills, using the Lit DAPAT tool to assess reading readiness and comprehension levels to enable targeted interventions that address specific learning needs.
This joint effort by Mr. DIY, World Vision and the Department of Education’s Brigada Pagbasa serves as a ray of hope and demonstrates the transformative power of community partnerships to build a brighter future for future generations.
