Valve Index VR headsets have been around for a few years. It doesn't have eye or face tracking, but it still inspired people like: [Physics-Dude] By combining hardware, open software, and 3D printable parts, you can add DIY solutions in an elegant and effective way.
This project leverages the EyeTrackVR project (and optionally Project Babble for mouth tracking), both of which have great applications, especially in the social VR space.
These are open source, self-contained, modular solutions targeting a variety of hardware platforms. Of course, when it comes to something you wear on your head, every millimeter and gram tends to matter. [Physics-Dude] We have tailored a solution specifically for Valve Index. His project takes full advantage of the platform's hacker-friendly hardware design.
[Physics-Dude] He also makes good use of certain widely available “gumstick” style USB hubs as a key part of his build. Combined with the Index's front-mounted USB port, it creates a very compact, tightly integrated, and good-looking solution. It's risky to rely on certain off-the-shelf items in your build, but it's absolutely important to do so here.
The documentation is excellent and includes helpful guidance and step-by-step instructions for cabling. Check it out if you're interested in adding eye tracking to your projects. Have you already implemented eye tracking in your own projects? Tell us all about it!
