SINGAPORE — Letting go of something can be difficult for children. That's the case with his 4-year-old boy who lives here and had a hard time saying goodbye to his family's car.
In a TikTok video last Friday (May 10), user 'Anak Koo' shared a bittersweet emotional reveal of his son Joshua with the sarcastic caption: “SG's car policy made my son cry!”
In the 53-second clip, Joshua appears inconsolable over the loss of his family's black BMW as its Certificate of Entitlement (COE) expires.
According to the video, he “practically grew up with cars.”
His mother said in the video that she had previously renewed the COE on the car for five years, but as per regulations, she cannot do so anymore.
In Singapore, cars that have expired COEs must be scrapped.
Even though his parents explained that they couldn't afford to buy a second car, Joshua couldn't hold back his tears.
According to the video, Joshua also provided money from his piggy bank to maintain the car.
Malaysian news site World of Buzz reported on Tuesday, adding that the boy's mother, Khoo, said her son was a “very sentimental child”.
So she and her husband had been preparing Joshua for weeks before the car was scrapped.
Is it attached? Or do you have the right?
The video garnered mixed opinions from netizens, some of whom said they empathized with the child and experienced similar feelings of attachment.
One TikTok user wrote: That's basically how I grew up. ”
Another person wrote: “My car is 15 years old and expired last year. My kids were upset too, because it was all around them at that point.”
However, some felt the boy's actions showed a sense of entitlement.
One viewer wrote: I gave up on myself (Merck), but my children accepted me right away. ”
Another said, “We need to teach him that life isn't fair and he won't get everything he wants or needs. …He will get it.” , Anak Ku replied: Children included. ”
Others went on to criticize the COE policy.
One user wrote: Appeal to the government to give this kid back his car! ”
Another said: “Aiyooo @ltasg look at you making a kid cry with your expensive COE ideas etc.”
According to another video by Anak Khoo, the family later bought another car, which Joshua quickly accepted.
