The Rockbridge Teacher Education Consortium (RTEC), a partnership between Washington and Lee University and Southern Virginia University, has received accreditation for its teacher preparation program by the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP).
The consortium is one of 38 providers that meet rigorous, nationally recognized accreditation standards developed to ensure excellence in educator preparation programs.
“These institutions meet high standards and ensure that students receive the education to succeed in a variety of classrooms after graduation,” said CAEP President Dr. Christopher A. Koch. “Seeking CAEP certification is an important initiative on the part of educational preparation providers.”
CAEP is a nationally recognized accrediting agency for educator preparation and certifies entry-level and advanced-level providers. Accreditation is a non-governmental activity based on peer review that serves the dual function of ensuring quality and promoting improvement. CAEP is a unified accreditation system designed to improve the performance of all educational institutions focused on educator preparation.

Educator preparation providers seeking certification must pass peer review on five criteria. These criteria are based on his two principles. One, hard evidence that the provider's graduates are competent and caring educators, and two, hard evidence that the provider's educator staff can use to build and sustain a culture of evidence.
