A savvy homeowner reveals how you can save thousands of dollars by installing insulation in your loft yourself, and says it's easier than you think.
On Reddit's DIYUK subreddit, he claims the DIY approach is “straightforward” and much cheaper than hiring a contractor. He was quoted a whopping £1,800 to £2,000 by experts, but managed to do it himself with just £250 in materials. mirror.
His post was accompanied by before and after photos and read: “Lofted and saved £1,750.”

He demonstrated how to cleverly lay insulation rolls between the joists and install gutter boards on top. He said, “It gave me confidence that things I thought would be difficult were actually easy and I could do more (safely) things around the house.”
“So I thought I would create a post to encourage people like me to try out DIY options.”
He continued: “Half of the loft was already occupied and the rest was needed for another project in progress. After receiving several quotes of between £1,800 and £2,000 to move into the loft, we decided to go the DIY route. The cost of materials was £250, and the labor took all day, my back was sore, and I had a few splinters (laughs).

Reddit users were quick to respond, with one posting: “I'm inspired to do the same for my loft! Lofts are one of the spaces I've completely avoided because 1) mine is Because it used to look like yours and 2) I was the same too.'' I'm scared of falling from the ceiling! ”
Another participant chimed in, “Good job, it's hard to bend the graft between the rafters and lift the board up there by yourself. Great job!”, while a third said his plan shared. “Good. That's exactly what I was thinking of doing. We recently built an almost new house (2 years old) and there's no planking in the loft, so space for Christmas decorations, suitcases, etc. was a real problem. ”
A fourth user shared a personal experience. “My husband also stayed in the loft and we saved him $1,700. He says it would have cost him about $700 to do it himself because of the high cost of lumber. He did a great job. I built a new hatch for us with a ladder.”
Some more experienced Reddit users suggested that staggering the boards might be more efficient, but the original poster still thought they did a good job.
