HAMPTON, Va. (WAVY) — Hampton University is partnering with Virginia state legislators to host an education forum to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision.
The forum will be held on Thursday, May 16th from 4:15pm to 6pm at the Hampton University Student Center. The event is free and open to the public.
This historic ruling declared racial discrimination in schools unconstitutional. This forum honors the Virginians who cooperated in this case and who continue to support educational equity.
Hampton University President Darrell K. Williams is affiliated with Attorney General Jason Miyares, Congressman Bobby Scott, and former Governor Bob McDonnell.
“The 70th anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education is an opportunity to remember Virginia's own courage in that 75 percent of the plaintiffs were Virginians,” Attorney General Jason Miyares said in a release. “Led by legal giants like Oliver Hill and ignited by the bold spirit of Barbara Johns and the Morton students, their relentless pursuit of justice did more than simply challenge racism. No. They moved mountains. As a result of their decision, the case against Prince Edward County was merged with Brown v. Board of Education and changed the course of civil rights history forever.
