New York City parents are calling for a state-of-the-art high school with a focus on artificial intelligence.
Five parents from the Citywide High School Council co-sponsored a resolution encouraging vocational schools to incorporate AI into core subjects, setting a national precedent and increasing competition with other countries.
“New York City serves as a center for innovation, capital investment, and entrepreneurship, making it an ideal place to cultivate AI talent,” parents said. It is stated in the written resolution.
“Delays in establishing AI-themed public high schools in New York City will result in a missed opportunity to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in the AI field,” they continued.
The proposal is expected to be voted on at Tuesday's meeting.
Demand for AI workers outstrips supply, and the industry, expected to reach $190 billion by next year, is growing significantly faster than other professions, the group argued.
The resolution recommends a curriculum that includes courses in computer science. Concentrating on AI, machine learning, and robotics. Collaboration with universities and industry partners. State-of-the-art equipment and laboratories.
“AI is ubiquitous and is everywhere,” said Benjamin Morden, CCHS member and lead sponsor of the resolution. “Let's expand AI instruction in high schools so students can pursue careers in AI, because they're already on that path without even knowing it.”
“We are thrilled that leading companies in the AI industry, including Google, Microsoft, and Nvidia, will support this effort to create an AI-themed high school in New York City by donating their resources, expertise, and funding. I hope so,” he added.
