A U.S. bank is facing a class-action lawsuit alleging it failed to protect customers' sensitive personal information and suffered a massive data breach.
Southstate Bank, which has more than $45 billion in assets, is the subject of a class action lawsuit in Florida led by plaintiff Latonya Gore, according to filings.
The lawsuit concerns a February 2024 data breach in which the names, financial account numbers, and social security numbers of the bank's customers were compromised.
SouthState failed to take appropriate and reasonable steps to ensure that its data systems were protected from unauthorized intrusion, and failed to take standard and reasonably available steps to prevent such breach. He is accused of failing to promptly and accurately notify customers of the incident.
Plaintiffs claim that hackers have already used the leaked personal information to commit identity theft. They also claim that hackers are still likely to commit other crimes, such as opening bank accounts in victims' names, taking out loans, and obtaining fake driver's licenses. .
Southstate reportedly issued a letter to customers regarding the breach, but the plaintiffs allege that the letter omitted virtually all important information.
The complaint states:
“Despite the defendant's intentional opacity about the root causes of this incident, several facts can be gleaned from the notice, including:
a) This data breach is the work of cybercriminals.
b) that the cybercriminals first infiltrated the Defendant's networks and systems and downloaded data from the networks and systems;
c) Once the cybercriminals gained access to the Defendants' networks and systems, they targeted the downloading and theft of Plaintiffs' and Class Members' information, including their social security numbers. ”
According to the complaint, the plaintiffs seek damages, including having to constantly monitor their financial and personal records for years to come.
