Authorities late Friday released a new photo of the suspect who allegedly shot and killed Chicago police officer Luis Huesca and urged anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.
Chicago police announced in a community alert at 10:51 p.m. that an arrest warrant had been issued for Xavier Tate Jr., 22, who was wanted in connection with Huesca's murder.
Early Friday morning, a judge signed charging documents and warrants against Tate, according to filings in Cook County Circuit Court.
Court records say the 22-year-old used a .40-caliber handgun to shoot and kill Huesca, who was found with multiple gunshot wounds near his home in Gage Park early Sunday morning. ing. At 2:53 a.m., officers found a fellow officer shot in the face after responding to a ShotSpotter alert near West 56th Street and South Kedzie Avenue, according to a police report.
Huesca was rushed to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead from his injuries. Huesca, a six-year veteran, was in uniform and heading home after his shift when the shooting occurred. His Toyota SUV was stolen after the shooting, but was later recovered.
Tate was scheduled to appear in court on an unrelated matter earlier this week, but did not appear, according to court records. Chicago police said anyone who sees Tate should not approach him and call 911 because he is considered armed and dangerous.
