DENVER (KDVR) — With violent crime on the rise in Colorado, a recent report analyzing crime rates reveals which towns are the safest in the Centennial State.
Home security product reviewer Safewise analyzed the Federal Bureau of Investigation's 2022 crime data, the most recent data available, to determine which cities in Colorado are the safest and have the lowest crime rates. .
Notably, not all cities report crime data to the FBI, so this study references 2022 data released in October 2023.
According to the report, Colorado's violent crime rate will be 5.8 per 1,000 people in 2022, the fourth highest in the nation. The report noted that violent crime rates have increased for the third consecutive year. The national average was 4.8 per 1,000 people.
Additionally, Colorado's property crime rate was the second highest in the nation at 32.7 crimes per 1,000 people, an increase of 4% from the previous year and 58% higher than the national average of 20.7 crimes. Nationally, property crime rates increased faster than Colorado, with a 7% increase since 2021.
Meanwhile, Colorado's safest cities have 27% fewer robberies than the state overall, the report said.
According to the report, these were the 10 safest cities in Colorado.

Milliken reported just one violent crime and 37 property crimes in 2021, according to the report. The 10 safest cities all reported fewer than 2 violent crimes per 1,000 people in 2022.
Milliken, Windsor, Severance and Gypsum each reported fewer than 10 property crimes per 1,000 people.
Milliken, Severance, Gypsum, Timnath and Woodland Park each reported fewer than 10 robberies, according to the report.
Other notable statistics included in the report include:
- Auto theft accounts for 25% of all property crimes in Colorado, 71% higher than the national average.
- Violent crimes account for 15% of all crimes in Colorado, one percentage point lower than the national average.
- Robberies account for 26% of violent crimes in Colorado, 59% higher than the national average of 11%.
The safest cities all reported zero homicides in 2022, but Castle Rock had three.
