Claudie, a student at St Connor's College, visited ReStore Ballymena, a low-cost DIY store that builds sustainable communities, to celebrate World DIY Day (April 2nd) belatedly.
Led by ReStore Volunteer Coordinator Matt Robinson, Year 6 students engaged in hands-on DIY activities aimed at developing important skills to help them live on their own. Students loved this interactive workshop and assembled flat-pack furniture.Learning the basics of typical student room decor and toolboxes
and “rental friendly” tips and tricks. We also had the opportunity to hear about Habitat's efforts and ReStore's commitment to reusing, repurposing, and sustainability.
ReStore is a social enterprise of Habitat for Humanity in Ireland that directly tackles poverty and builds sustainable communities. ReStore provides local people with access to low-cost home improvement materials, provides employability training to people of all abilities, and diverts large amounts of materials from landfills.
Isobel Kerr, ReStore Ballymena Manager, said: “We were delighted to welcome young people to the ReStore to celebrate a belated World DIY Day.Each year, ReStores across the country collect over 1,500 tonnes of reusable materials. diverted from landfill, giving more than 90,000 local residents access to low-cost materials to improve their homes.”
“With support from The Gallaher Trust, ReStore Ballymena is also able to offer OCN NI accredited, free, practical and accessible ‘Foundations at ReStore’ courses. Locals can learn the skills they need to succeed in retail, learn basic DIY skills, and take time to think about their health. ”
