The Federal Maritime Commission is seeking feedback on the accuracy of maritime data, focusing on the movement of containers between service providers and importers and exporters.
The U.S. Federal Maritime Commission will focus on information related to containers passing through maritime terminals and will continue its information gathering process to inform potential future Commission activities related to the accuracy of maritime data. We are seeking public comment on these questions.
In particular, the European Commission is seeking answers regarding what data elements are communicated between transport service providers and importers/exporters.
The Commission is also seeking information on how changes to information are communicated, where communications are most likely to be broken, or where information is most likely to be conveyed inaccurately. Masu.
Maritime Traffic Data Initiative
The Federal Maritime Commission aims to build on a previous intelligence study published last year in parallel with the commission's May 2023 report on the Maritime Data Initiative (MTDI).
The MTDI, headed by Director Karl Benzel, investigated the issue of data use and sharing within the supply chains served by international shipping companies. Commissioner Bentzel released a report in May 2023 summarizing the information collected and the initial findings.
The Commission is currently seeking additional information to expand the information gathered from the Commission's August 23, 2023 Request for Information on MTDI and Data Availability, Accuracy, and Exchange (88 FR 55697). I'm looking for it. This request places special emphasis on data accuracy.
A common theme uncovered by the MTDI was the difficulty in accurately collecting and predicting container pick-up/return information. MTDI participants cited challenges such as determining who should provide information, that information changes frequently, and that changes are not communicated to shipping entities.
These points have been repeatedly raised with the Commission through a number of channels, including the National Shipper Advisory Committee. The European Commission has produced an earlier Request for Information to understand some of the data challenges faced by companies across the supply chain.
The purpose of this information request is to focus on information related to containers passing through marine terminals and to continue the process of information gathering to inform potential future Commission activities.
The purpose of these questions is to ask for information about data accuracy and not about specific customers/partners, so commenters should not name specific customers/partners when responding. not.
Although the committee has divided its questions into categories specific to specific stakeholders, it would also like to hear from members of the public who can answer all questions.
