Brazilian police said Wednesday that a 68-year-old man in a wheelchair was found dead for several hours after a woman brought him into a bank branch and tried to get him to sign for a loan.
Erika Vieira Nunez forced the body into a bank on the outskirts of Rio on Tuesday and told a teller that a man wanted a loan of 17,000 reais ($3,250), security camera footage showed. .
She held the pen and moved her hand forward, but there was no response.
“Uncle, are you listening? I need you to sign,” she said, indicating she would sign for him, according to the security video.
“He doesn't say anything. That's his personality,” she said, adding, “If he's not okay, we'll take him to the hospital.”
When the man's head continued to fall back even after the woman stopped holding his head, a bank employee in Brazil became suspicious and called the police, who arrested the woman on the spot on suspicion of fraud. Her body was taken to the morgue.
Her lawyer argued that the man died at the bank, but that a police forensic analysis showed he had previously died in a lying position.
