SALINA, N.Y. — Leaders in New York and across the country are mourning the shooting deaths of a Syracuse police officer and an Onondaga County sheriff's deputy in Salina Sunday night.
Salina Town Supervisor Nick Parro thanked police and others who responded to the incident. He said the community is grieving along with the families of the slain officers.
“We all appreciate your sacrifice and dedication to your duty,” he said in a news release. “Most of us will never truly know the pain you are going through and your family will remain in our prayers.”
State Rep. Bill Magnarelli said the loss of police officers is a devastating blow to downtown New York.
“We want to remember the law enforcement officers who have died in the line of duty and honor their heroism and accomplishments,” he said in a news release. “Our prayers are with their families and colleagues.”
Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh called the officers heroes and said the incident was “my worst nightmare come true.”
Two officers were killed while attempting to pursue a traffic stop that began in Syracuse after a driver sped away. Police tracked the driver and arrived at his home on Darien Street in the town of Salina.
Officers and suspects exchanged gunfire there.
The two officers and the suspect were all hit. The suspect was also killed.

The last time an Onondaga County police officer was shot and killed in the line of duty was more than 30 years ago.
On Monday morning, comments about the police officer's death were pouring in from across New York and other parts of the United States.
The Boston Police Criminal Benevolent Association wrote on X (formerly Twitter) that the group was saddened by the killing.
