The New York University marketing professor and successful entrepreneur recently highlighted storytelling as an important skill for young people entering the workforce. Billionaire Scott Galloway, who sold his company for more than his $130 million, believes effective communication is important in a world that is increasingly dependent on technology. Platforms may evolve, but the ability to clearly express ideas using data and visuals is timeless.
“If I could give 13-year-old and 16-year-old kids one ability that I think will stand the test of time, it would be storytelling,” the 59-year-old said. CNBC Make It. Galloway added that the type of storytelling may not matter because the platforms people use to communicate can change rapidly. Still, the important part is developing “the ability to write well, express ideas clearly, and present ideas using data, infographics, and slideshows.”
In an exchange with CNBC Make It, Galloway cautioned against relying solely on AI tools like ChatGPT. The future of AI and coding is uncertain, but strong storytelling will always be a valuable asset. It also emphasizes the importance of specialized knowledge. Regardless of technological advances, becoming an authority in your field is a reliable path to success.
Galloway spoke to the media about how brand storytelling can directly contribute to or detract from a brand's success.
The importance of storytelling in particular is why young people shouldn't rely solely on generative artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT – not now, and never in the future, Galloway said.
“I don't know if there will be a neural network that will replace ChatGPT in five years. I don't know if coding will become obsolete,” he said.
“Certain things keep generals out,” Galloway added. “Find a niche, no matter how narrow, and try to own it. Promise yourself to be one of the most knowledgeable people in the world about that field…so If you don't, you'll never be an expert at anything.'' You won't enjoy it. ”
