interview Companies like OpenAI and Google DeepMind are chasing the legendary artificial general intelligence, but not everyone thinks that's the best use of time and energy in AI development.
Binny Gill, a computer scientist and CEO and co-founder of business automation company Kognitos and former chief architect and cloud CTO at Nutanix, believes that promoting AGI is completely the wrong approach to what could be the next industrial revolution. I think there is. Rather than trying to replicate humans with some kind of artificial general intelligence, Gill believes we should look to the past and consider what kind of systems we should build.
“I believe we need to learn a little from the industrial era, look at how we have reduced physical labor, and then use those learnings to think about how we can reduce mental labor. '' said Gill. register.
“We created a bunch of machines with different looks, and they didn't imitate human arms and legs. Cars don't have legs. Elevators have ropes to climb. I don’t have an arm.”
Instead, Gill hopes to see the rise of what he calls artificial narrow intelligence (ANI). This is not a new concept. This is a type of application-specific machine learning that already exists behind things like self-driving cars.
And even if machines have intelligence and superhuman abilities, we still need to be informed. “Humans are needed to ultimately decide what's right and what's wrong,” Gill said. “We need Iron Man inside the suit.”
