More than $1.4 million in settlements are on the way to customers of a major U.S. bank after a data breach compromised their privacy and security.
Webster Bank and multiple companies associated with it are accused of failing to protect customers' personally identifiable information during a data breach between November 27, 2022 and January 22, 2023.
Confidential information leaked includes social security numbers, financial account details, and full names of Webster Bank customers.
The bank uses the services of Guardian Analytics, which monitors financial transactions, and was ultimately responsible for leaking Webster Bank customer data to unknown third-party hackers.
Webster and Guardian Analytics have not admitted any legal wrongdoing in the case, but have agreed to a $1.4 million settlement that will be distributed to the bank's customers.
Customers affected by this incident have until March 25 to determine whether they are eligible for a cash payment and to submit a claim through Webster Bank.
Final approval of the settlement will be given in a New Jersey court on April 23.
Banking giant Wells Fargo also announced this month that it had suffered a data breach that exposed confidential information about at least two of its customers.
The California-based financial giant said in a letter that personal information and mortgage account numbers were compromised.
