The hackers behind the cyberattack on Leicester City Council may be selling stolen data, experts have warned.
The council confirmed that 25 documents were posted online on April 3, with a “larger number of further documents” made public on Tuesday.
Ismini Vasileiou, associate professor of information systems at Demontford University, said measures are being taken.
“I hope the police can get to the bottom of this incident and eliminate it.” [stolen] It’s data from the dark web,” she said.
A large amount of personal information has already been uploaded to the dark web, with files downloaded at least 120 times, but law enforcement could fight back and delete that data.
Leicester City Council said no ransom demands have been made at this stage.
Dr Vasileiou, who is also director of the East Midlands Cyber Security Cluster, said the criminal use of data “could go in any direction”.
“At this stage, it's completely unclear because we don't know how they package the data to be resold elsewhere,” she said.
“That unknown scares users, Leicester City Council and [is] Why are we taking it so seriously? ”
