This video posted on social media platform X showed a total solar eclipse during the flight. One user wrote, “This really made me realize how small and insignificant we really are.”
On the same post, another user commented: “This is so beautiful. I could stare at it all day.”
@PhysInHistory explained that it's a rare event where the moon aligns perfectly with the sun. The reason this happens is an amazing coincidence. Even though the Moon is much smaller than the Sun, it is also much closer to Earth. This means that they appear about the same size in the sky. But it gets even more interesting! The moon does not orbit the earth in a perfect circle. Its path resembles an oval. This means that it can be close to Earth or far from Earth. This can be a total solar eclipse or a partial solar eclipse, and will affect how you view the solar eclipse.
Fortunately, the size of the Sun hasn't changed much over time, which is essential for these eclipses to continue to occur. But there's a twist. The moon is slowly moving away from the earth. Eventually, after billions of years, this drift will prevent total solar eclipses from occurring altogether.
