Several Midwestern states are on track to ramp up for Monday's event, including Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. Chicago will experience a partial solar eclipse that will cover about 94% of the sun.
“Most of the solar eclipses that our region will see after this one will not be as strong as this one,” said Michelle Nichols, director of public observations at the Adler Planetarium. he told NBC Chicago. “That means 94% of the sun will be covered.” [in Chicago] And in the coming decades in our region, almost all residential buildings will have 94% no sun coverage. NBC 5 Storm Team Meteorologist Kevin Jeans called the event “the largest solar eclipse to occur across the United States in our lifetime.”
What is a total solar eclipse?
According to NASA scientists, a total solar eclipse occurs when the new moon intersects the sun's orbit in the sky, partially and almost completely blocking the sun from view.
In Carbondale, Illinois' largest city, which is included in the path, totality will begin around 1:59 p.m., and the state says the eclipse will follow a diagonal over Fairfield and end at Mount Carmel, so totality will be around 2 p.m. Officials are expected to finish around 3 p.m.
If you're in the Chicago area, you won't be able to see the total solar eclipse, but there is a silver lining. A partial solar eclipse will be visible for some time. In areas outside of the total orbit, like Chicago, you will need to wear eclipse glasses.
