The Humboldt Education Foundation (HEF) challenged schools and communities to a penny war in February, and the results are in.
One of the main missions of the Humboldt Educational Foundation (HEF) through the Hungry Kids Project (HKP) is to empower students to learn by ending childhood hunger. Currently, more than 52 percent of children in HUSD's 10 schools qualify for free or reduced-price school meals.
From February 20th to 23rd, local students from all HUSD competed in a penny war.
Some schools were very competitive. Last year's contest raised $4,000.36, with Liberty Traditional School raising the most donations at his $1,840.13.
The results have been announced and this year, $4,541.26 was raised, while Liberty Traditional School raised $3,026.94, increasing fundraising for Hungry Kids by more than 60 percent. Amy Fleming, HEF Chair, said: We would also like to thank our district dietitian, Pam Liuzzo, who made all the arrangements. ”
See below how much money the students raised.
LTS: $3026.94 (1st place)
GHMS: $571.14 (2nd place)
HES: $437.13 (3rd place)
CSES: $204.40
LVES: $89.67
GES: $54.52
MVES: $79.45
BMMS: $20.00
Venmo: 58.00
Grand total = $4541.25
The community was asked to match the amount raised by the school, which the school did, with a total of $4,913.08 donated. “This will cover almost two months' worth of food purchases,” said HEF board member Lori Hunt.
Hungry Kids' labor costs are now low as all food bags are purchased, packed and distributed by HKP volunteers.
The team packs more than 250 bags each week, at a cost of $11 per bag.
HEF has also been successful in making grants, and local churches regularly make generous donations. Donations will be used to purchase items through school lunch and nutrition services and partnerships with local grocery stores. There is a specific list of items that can be packed into each bag. During the school year, students referred to this project will receive two breakfasts, two lunches, and two dinners each Friday. The most rewarding part of the Hong Kong project is that my students come Monday morning with full bellies and ready to learn.
How can the community help?
Monetary donations and gift cards to Fry's and Walmart are needed now. Mail donations to Hungry Kids Project, POB 25606, Prescott Valley 86312.
You can join the HKP team and help pack your belongings by calling Molly at 928.899.2639 on Friday morning. In addition to Hungry Kids, HEF's main focus is his Teacher of the Year (TOY) event scheduled for April 18th at the Prescott Valley warehouse. Other foundation projects include Calm Staker Student Scholarship Awards and Classroom Grants for Special Projects.
The Humboldt Education Foundation is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and an Arizona Certified Charity under the Arizona Tax Credit Program.
