The Life Time Foundation, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded by Life Time Inc., recently donated $50,000 to support the Education Fund's Food Forest for Schools program.
The initiative, which currently involves 28,000 students across Miami-Dade County Public Schools (MDCPS), aims to foster deeper connections with students, healthy food choices, and the environment.
“Our Lifetime Foundation has partnered with the Education Foundation to expand the Miami-Dade County Public Schools School Food Forest Program, providing school communities with access to healthy food options, healthy eating habits, and access to nature. We are honored to be able to connect with their precious time together,” said Sarah Emola, Lifetime Director of ESG Programs and the Lifetime Foundation.
“We applaud the Education Foundation’s commitment to developing students who are more engaged, attentive, physically healthy, and less stressed, which is central to the Lifetime Foundation’s mission. Together, we create a wonderful collaboration that enables all children to lead healthy and happy lives,” Emola added.
The Lifetime Foundation presented the Education Fund with a $50,000 check during its 10th annual “Taste of Education” event held on February 27 at Hialeah Park. The event celebrated the culinary talents of Miami-Dade County public high school and middle school students and provided them with: A platform to showcase your skills to hundreds of guests including judges, local celebrity chefs, food journalists, and industry leaders.
The event included Miami-Dade County Board of Education Chair Mari Terre Rojas, school board members Roberto Alonso and Mary Blanco, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools Chief Academic Officer Lourdes Diaz. Famous people attended.
Culinary students and their culinary programs were awarded cash prizes to enhance their programs with state-of-the-art equipment and ingredients. Special recognition went to Kinloch Park Secondary School, which won the People's Choice Award for its delicious French Dip sandwich. Taste of Education 2024 Culinary Champions include Miami Jackson High School, Miami Springs High School, Michael M. Cropp High School, Miami Coral Park High School, Miami Springs High School, and Redlands Middle School.
The Education Fund's Food Forest Program for Schools helps students develop a deeper understanding and connection to health and the environment. In this program, students plant and maintain edible gardens and food forests on school grounds while using those gardens to learn about healthy eating and environmental sustainability.
From a pilot program in just five schools, the Food Forest for Schools Initiative has grown to 71 schools, serving a diverse population of primarily low-income families. The main objective of Food Forests for School is to significantly improve the dietary patterns of children and their families, while simultaneously improving the academic performance of students.
The Life Time Foundation is a nonprofit organization created by Life Time, Inc., a major sponsor of the Miami Marathon. There are currently two Lifetime Athletic Country Clubs in the Miami area, one in Coral Gables and the newest location in The Falls.
