FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — One person was killed and two others were hospitalized after part of a crane fell from a building in downtown Fort Lauderdale Thursday afternoon, authorities said.
Fort Lauderdale Fire and Rescue Chief Stephen Gaughran said at a news conference that crews were “stepping on the crane” during construction of a high-rise building when a part of the crane that was being prepared to raise it came loose. Ta. Officials said a construction worker suffered fatal injuries after falling off the crane. The crane itself remained fixed to the building.
Golan said the crane section landed on a nearby bridge, damaging at least two vehicles. The man and woman on the ground were taken to a nearby hospital, where their condition is said to be stable. Another person was treated at the scene but refused transport to the hospital.
The bridge was damaged by a falling crane section and the road will be closed indefinitely until it is repaired. The river flowing under the bridge was also closed to marine traffic.
Authorities did not immediately know what caused the crane section to fall. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration and Fort Lauderdale Fire Rescue will investigate.
