The New Orleans Police Department held a press conference regarding errors in reporting to the Special Victims Unit in 2021 and 2022. Information was provided to the Louisiana Law Enforcement Commission and provided to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. LCLE requested crime statistics, which were reported. NOPD reporting data for 2021 or 2022 found that about one-third of eligible sex crimes go uncounted. In 2021, 32.5% of all sex crimes were unreported or uncounted. This would represent a 48.3% increase in sexual offense cases from the 501 originally reported in 2021. In 2022, 39.12% of these crimes were not reported or counted, an increase of 64.25% from the original 442 cases. The department is using this to ensure more accurate reporting, including publicizing errors in data reporting and implementing a new sexual violence data management system that publishes quarterly reports on both sexual offenses data and domestic violence data. We are taking multiple steps to address the issue.
