Orlando, Florida – To safely view the April 8 solar eclipse, you must take the necessary precautions to do so safely. To observe the part of the eclipse where part of the sun is not always covered, you will need to obtain approved solar glasses or make your own projection device.
These devices are easy to make using household items you probably already have at home. This would also be a fun project to do with kids.
Create your own solar eclipse projector
The main component is the box. Any size or box will work. Cereal or shoe boxes are perfect.
You will also need scissors, white paper, tape, aluminum foil, and a pencil.
step 1: Drill two square holes on the same side of the box.
Step 2: Tape a piece of aluminum foil over one of the holes. Use a pencil to make small holes in the foil.
Step 3: Tape a piece of white paper to the inside of the box, opposite the hole. This is where the solar eclipse will be projected. Close the box.
With your back to the sun, tilt the box so that the hole faces the sun. Look through the hole and you'll see a solar eclipse projected onto the computer paper on the back of the box.
You can also cut holes in cardboard or paper to project the solar eclipse onto the ground.
