Martha James, a University of Wisconsin-Madison alumnus who earned her bachelor's degree in the School of Education's Physical Education Teacher Education program in 1993, shared a TEDx talk titled “Move Your Kids to Shine!” did.
In her talk at TEDxUStreetWomen, James identifies the movement as a powerful solution to address the many challenges facing public schools. By sharing his own journey, James highlights the transformative impact of exercise on students' sense of ownership, effectiveness, and well-being. She reveals the impact that physical education's undervaluation has on society and explores how embracing movement can foster a more fair and just education system.
James is an associate professor in the College of Education and Urban Studies at Morgan State University. Her research interests focus on best practices in cultural fluency, interdisciplinary education, and professional development.
His most recent books include HQPE: Exploring the Role of Physical Education in the Face of America's Education Debt (2021) and It's a Movement, Not a Moment: Using Hope Theory to Position Kinesiology on the Path to Social Justice. (2021). Explore how access to quality physical education and recreation is essential to addressing historical exclusion and contemporary marginalization, and is itself an act of anti-racism.
