A family court in Madhya Pradesh recently said wearing a sindoor is a “religious obligation” for married Hindu women. The court made this statement regarding the ceremonial “indoors” while instructing the woman to “immediately return to her husband's home.”
The directions by Chief Justice of the Indore Family Court NP Singh came while “he was hearing a plea by a man seeking restoration of his rights under the Hindu Marriage Act after his wife divorced him five years ago.”
“When the woman's statement was recorded in court, she admitted that she was not wearing sindoor. Sindoor is a religious obligation of a wife and it shows that the woman is married,” the judge said. stated in the March 1 order. Citing PTI. The command further said: “She has deserted her husband. She is not wearing sindoor.”
The woman accused her husband of “physical and mental harassment for dowry purposes” and walked out of their marriage. After going through the material on record and hearing both parties, the court said, “The woman has not filed any complaint or report regarding the allegations with the police.”
