SEO entrepreneur Joe Davis shares his wisdom on how to become a millionaire now that he's obsessed with his career path.
After years of dead-end jobs at McDonald's and elsewhere, Davis was eager to make a name for himself, a desire he shared with childhood friend Joe Taylor.
“I didn't go to college as originally planned because I was tired of learning and just wanted to make money,” Davis, 36, explained to Jam Press.
“[After leaving school], I worked mostly on construction sites, making factory-to-store deliveries, and flipping burgers at McDonald's,” he continued. “I hated it because I felt like I wasn't doing anything important.”
Aware that e-commerce was booming at the time, the British native took a $125-a-week job as an IT apprentice and quickly learned tricks like how to make money using search engine optimization.
“The company I worked for asked me to build a website, and I learned SEO while on the job. That was the first time I heard that word,” Davis said. “I couldn’t put my finger on it exactly, but there was an element of engineering combined with creativity and marketing, and that really influenced my creative personality.”
Davis said he quickly understood the business side at his next job, an SEO agency.
When the employer was looking for a salesperson, Davis recommended Taylor.
“And the rest is history,” Davis said.
Both Joes end up making millions of dollars.
Sitting across from desks, the two decided in 2012 to launch FATJOE.com and develop a system to score top SEO results for clients. This has never been done at other agencies.
They are said to have made their first million within two years.
“When we were kids, we dreamed of having our own rock band and being rich and famous,” Davis recalls. He still likes to play the guitar. “One in two isn't that bad.”
The Joes realized they had made a great business team and quit their jobs in 2013 to devote themselves fully to the business.
“We rented an office from day one to make it 'realistic' and did everything ourselves at first. Me and Joe would be working up to 13 hours a day to get everything done,” says Davis. , said they have built a large team of experts and writers over time.
“We happened to create this great solution, a service platform for agencies to outsource SEO services, and we are currently using it at our old agency as well,” he added.
The $12.6 million company employs 100 people worldwide and has 1,000 agencies on its client roster, Jam Press reports.
An only child, Davis was inspired by her father, Mick, 60, an entrepreneur who runs a first aid training company.
Davis says aspiring entrepreneurs need three key traits: personal drive, curiosity, and a burning desire to make money.
“It's a cliché, but just start something. Run and build,” Davis advised. “A lot of the problems for me were procrastinating and thinking about the right time to start, and the time never came.”
Plans can change, so don't think too far ahead. Davis also recommends it. There is no such thing as “fate”.
“It's all about working hard and seeing where it takes you,” he declared.
