In reality, Lynks is a softer presence than their intentionally cheeky music suggests. Their conversational style – witty, inquisitive, a little existential – makes sense when they say they studied psychology at university. “We know we should be talking about the album, not the science of gay self-esteem issues,” they later warn. Lynx (who also uses he and she pronouns) are happy to show their faces when we meet in a deserted south London pub in the early afternoon, but they don't intend to go maskless in their art. “I have deleted all photos of my face from the internet so no one will ever find them,” they said, before adding that thanks to previous interviews the government’s name was already “in the public eye.” ” I deplore the fact that “I'm trying to get rid of that [too]. I want to be like Banksy. ”
So why aren't we wearing masks today? “I feel a little self-important,” they say. “When I do Zoom interviews, I don't turn on the camera, but I'm not going to sit in the Camberwell sun wearing a goddamn gimp mask.” Lynx's persona may be less spicy than on record But he's just as funny and plain-spoken. When asked about their surreal yet surprisingly comforting 2020 bop, “How to Make Béchamel Sauce in 10 Steps (with Photos),” they said: I was cooking a meal. So I hit play on the beat and read the entire recipe. ”
For the record, they don't really see Lynx as a personality or alter ego. “It's more like wearing a green screen suit. You know, a suit with dots that can transform into anything.” [with CGI]On stage, Lynx is often a topless choreographer, making any venue feel like a gay club mosh pit. They liken their live set to “a big pop diva show, but thrown into the woods.” And because Lynx bases his art on an avant-garde performance, before singing the song “Abomination” called “CPR,” the dancers pretend to have passed out and Lynx brings them back to life. They can be as “manic, crazy, gothy and punkish” as they want.
“We are very limited by our bodies, [notions of] “I hate to say it, but if I wasn't wearing the Lynx costume, people would be disgusted with what I was doing on stage.” It would feel so weird, why would this very nice-looking boy Are they singing this crazy sex song? ”
