Threads has launched a feature to help bridge the gap with X: Trending Topics.
“Trendnow is rolling out to the US starting today so you can see what people are talking about in threads. Enjoy!” Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wrote in a Threads post.
Zuckerberg initially announced “small tests of today's top topics” in mid-February, promising a larger rollout “once things are aligned.”
The functionality of the Threads version is simpler than that found in X (formerly Twitter), but may change over time. Currently, Threads Trends consists of his five topics that are popular on social media sites at the time a user checks out the app or his website. X users can interact with a large number of trending terms and topics.

To see trending topics in threads, press the search icon at the bottom of the app. If this feature is turned on, you'll see trending topics appear above a never-ending list of follow recommendations.

According to Threads, a trending topic is one that people are definitely talking about a lot. However, they are also carefully selected. Threads says, “Content experts review topics to ensure they meet our guidelines.” The most likely reason for the low number of topics and curation is to avoid the nightmarish content that X has been dealing with for several years.
Meta told TechCrunch that Meta AI determines trending topics by considering metrics such as the number of people posting about the topic and the number of people engaging with posts about the topic. He said it was also helpful. TechCrunch also points out that while Threads avoids encouraging political posts, the trending topics feature makes no such promise. Users can expect politics to appear there from time to time.
