CHENNAI: Observatories in the city have recorded near-normal daytime temperatures for the past two days, but residents are feeling sweaty and sticky due to high humidity. Experts say the influx of humid winds from the Bay of Bengal keeps daytime temperatures low while keeping humidity high. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said the city is likely to experience mild weather till April, with sea breezes keeping temperatures in check. Private forecasters said maximum temperatures could rise by 1-2 degrees Celsius starting next week, with Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam on Monday recording temperatures 0.1 degrees Celsius and 0.3 degrees below normal. 33.2°C and 34°C were recorded. While the city has recorded temperatures below 35 degrees Celsius except for a few days last week, in interior districts like Karur, Erode and Salem, temperatures are already approaching 40 degrees Celsius. But the humidity in the city was over 70%. IMD Regional Weather Forecasting Center Director N. Senthamarai Kannan said temperatures in the city reached 35 degrees Celsius for several days last week due to delayed inflow of sea breeze. “Daytime temperatures in the city will remain near normal till the first week of April. Central areas like Karur, Trichy and Namakkal are likely to record temperatures up to 2 degrees above normal. Inland areas such as Salem could record temperatures of 39 to 40 degrees, he said. IMD has predicted the maximum temperature in the city to be 33 degrees Celsius. Mahesh Palawat, chief meteorologist at private forecasting firm Skymet Weather, said an anticyclone (a large-scale circulation of winds around an area of high pressure) will form. Winds over the central and central Bay of Bengal are pushing towards the Indian coast, keeping daytime temperatures in check. “Daytime temperatures may rise by one or two degrees by next week.”
