SAN JOSE (Reuters) – Artificial intelligence semiconductor giant Nvidia opened its annual developer conference on Monday, with investors taking note of new chip announcements from Chief Executive Officer Jensen Huang during an afternoon keynote speech.
Nvidia's new chip and software announcements at GTC 2024 will determine whether the company can maintain its leadership position as a major seller of the tools needed to fuel the past year's excitement around AI. Helpful. Nvidia dominates the data center AI chip market, with about 80% share last year.
Nvidia's market share is expected to decline several percentage points in 2024 as new products from rivals such as Intel and Advanced Micro Devices come to market.
Huang is expected to announce the next generation AI processor designed by his company. The upcoming B100 chip is expected to include significant improvements over the previous generation, his H100.
Nvidia is widely known as a chip design company, but the company also develops a number of software products, and Huang is expected to announce a number of new software-related products on Monday. Nvidia announced earlier this year that its software and services business reached an annual operating rate of $1 billion by the end of the previous fiscal year.
This year, the Santa Clara, Calif., company will host GTC in-person for the first time since 2019. Approximately 16,000 people are expected to attend, roughly double the number of previous in-person events.
Hwang's keynote address is scheduled to take place at 1pm (2000 JST) at Silicon Valley's Hockey Arena, the largest venue the company has secured for an event of its kind.
