NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Florida State center Micah Handlotten broke his lower left foot and was carried off the court on a stretcher in the opening minutes of Sunday's Southeastern Conference tournament finals.
Handroten, a 7-foot-1 sophomore, had two rebounds in two minutes and was about to pick up a third when he landed awkwardly on his left foot with 17:46 left in the first half. He immediately collapsed in pain and rolled onto his side, putting his hands on his face.
The sound of an obvious bone breaking could be heard on the TV and blood could immediately be seen on the back of the calf.
Play continued until No. 12 Auburn scored when Aiden Holloway received a pass and made a layup at the other end. After that, the game ended with 17 minutes and 39 seconds remaining, and everyone inside Bridgestone Arena fell silent as trainers rushed out to take care of Handrogten. His parents were brought into the courtroom from the bleachers.
Handrogten's leg was placed in an air cast before being placed on a backboard and then lifted onto a stretcher. As Handlotten was taken off the court, his teammates came up to him. Fellow sophomore Riley Kugel was seen crying on the Florida bench.
Handrogten was taken to Vanderbilt University Medical Center for testing, and Florida State coach Todd Golden confirmed the fracture to ESPN's Marty Smith at halftime of Sunday's game.
Handroten averaged 5.5 points and 7.1 rebounds during the regular season, which ranked fifth in the SEC.
