TubeOhm Jeannie: New firmware 3.10 adds 21 oscillator algorithms from MI Braids and Shruti, new patches, and more.
Jeannie has been with us for two and a half years. This is a digital desktop DIY synthesizer from Germany with 8-voice simultaneous pronunciation. The synthesizer has grown steadily through 2023 and 2024. Best of all, his Erica Synths is now available in an all-black case that makes the synthesizer look even more complete.
Last November, the developer added a new mono mode, smoother filter controls, new distortion curves, and more. The new firmware 3.10 is probably the biggest sound update for Jeannie Synthesizer to date.
Tube Ohm Genie 3.10
All-new firmware 3.10 lets you explore 21 new oscillator models. These come from open source Eurorack oscillators Mutable Instruments Braids and Shruti.
You'll find classic oscillators as well as unique oscillators such as vowel, shruti PD, and 8-bit oscillators. It also hosts an enhanced multiwave oscillator with up to six tunable sawtooth oscillators.
This update also includes four different wavetable oscillators that can be modulated with two LFOs and an ADSR envelope. Additionally, you get a new patch volume parameter with built-in DSO to adjust. The main page also shows a new level indicator. Additionally, the new firmware fixes some bugs.
As an added bonus, the new Jeannie firmware also ships with new sound banks from our users and TubeOhm. These increase the number of patches to 500.
A great update to the Jeannie digital synthesizer. It's still a little-known synth. I hope these new algorithms will refocus him.
The new firmware 3.10 is a free update and is available from the TubeOhm website.

Articles for November 2021
Last May, just before summer, I reported on Jeannie, developer Rolf Degen's new DIY digital polyphonic synthesizer. He is known to some for his De-Generator, which we have already featured here.
Rolf told me today that Jennie is now available on the TubeOhm website.
Genie DIY Synthesizer
Jeannie is an 8-voice polyphonic DIY synthesizer with 2 oscillators (sync, FM, etc.), a multimode filter, a waveshaper, 2 envelopes, 2 LFOs, and a step sequencer. It consists of her DIY motherboard with Teensy 4.1 (816 MHz), optional her DSP expansion board for effects, housing, and power supply (12V min 1A).
The core of the sound engine uses two oscillators per voice, exploring 945 different waveforms. It has some parameters and gives you more parameters to dig deeper. Pitch, pitch envelope, glide, detune, level, PW amount, PWM, oscillator mix…
Jeannie also offers up to 8x unison mode, allowing up to 16 oscillators in a single voice. Impressive for such a compact synth.
Both oscillators then go to a multimode state variable (Chamberlin) filter with 12dB/octave and adjustable resonance. You can choose between LP, HP, and BP filters.
There are plenty of multi-type waveshapers here (XOR ring MOD, XMOD, MOD, FM…), so things get exciting behind the filter. The signal path is slightly different from what is normally known from synthesizers. This design decision means that the Waveshaper acts as a wave shaper and distortion effect.
On the modulation side there are two classic ADSR envelopes and two multiwave LFOs. For melodic content, you can activate a polyphonic sequencer with up to 4 voices.
effect
Jeannie features digital FX running at an adjustable clock rate between 10 and 60 kHz. So whether you want a clean effect or a dirty effect, it's your choice. You can choose from a variety of effects such as chorus, flanger, and reverb. echo. If you need more, you can upgrade the engine via additional boards containing DSP.
It offers 14 new programmable and storable effects, including distortion, tonator, 2-stage and 5-stage chorus, gate, X-delay, and more.
back side
On the back, you'll find a 12V DC power input, power switch, stereo output, MIDI In/Out with Thru function, and a USB connection for firmware updates. Inside is a micro SD card that can store up to 2048 patches. That should be enough space for years to come.
The synthesizer is operated with a main encoder, four parameter controllers, a volume knob, and several function buttons. Additionally, there's a color LCD display and handy lights to indicate the status of the features (MIDI, FX, etc.).
A very exciting project is currently in preparation. For such a compact synthesizer, Jeannie offers a lot of features. And there are many that are beyond the norm. See Waveshaper or many waveforms. And most importantly, it sounds great and is versatile. Looks like a great DIY project for cold days.
TubeOhm Jeannie is currently available as a DIY project. There are two versions of the PCB. The price for experienced users without pre-soldered SMD parts is 63,90 euros, the other 92,30 euros. A complete Jeannie 3 kit with all pre-soldered PCBs and components is available for 294 euros. Power supply and SD card are not included.
