how to make easter egg decorations
step 1
Paint the eggs with one or more background colors using a testpot brush and a Resene testpot in the color of your choice. I used Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Blue Bayou, Resene Wedgwood, and Resene True Blue. For best results, paint in two coats and allow the first coat to dry completely before adding the second coat.
Step 2
Use a testpot brush to paint sections of medium cardstock paper in one or more accent colors of your choice. Here I used Resene Duck Egg Blue, Resene Blue Bayou, Resene Wedgwood, and Resene True Blue. For best coverage, apply two coats of each and allow the first coat to dry completely before applying the second. Using a hair dryer can speed up the drying process and also keep the paper smooth as it dries.
Step 3
Cut out each painted section. Use a paper punch to punch out the shapes. In terms of flower size, approximately 45 flowers were needed to cover each egg. However, depending on the size and shape of the punch, the amount needed may be more or less. If you prefer, you can also cut out smaller shapes instead of using a paper punch.
Step 4
Adhere the back side of the paper cutout to the egg with small beads of hot glue. Leave small, even gaps between where you attach each shape until each egg is completely covered. Once the glue has set, you can use your fingers to gently shape and create curves to give it more dimension. This works especially well on flowers and heart shapes.
If you're using real eggs, be sure to use the pin prick method to place the yolks and whites in an airtight container (see below). Try to leave as much of the shell in one piece as possible. Seal the container and store the egg yolks and egg whites in the refrigerator for up to 3 days to use in omelets, cakes, and other favorite recipes.
top tip
pin prick method
Carefully make a small hole in the pointed end of a clean egg and a larger hole in the bottom. Break up the yolk. Place the egg over the bowl with the small hole facing up and blow gently to release the contents. Wash and dry the shells.
