DIY’s October 2023 cover star Lauren Mayberry is back with another solo single, the propulsive and powerful pop anthem “Change Shapes.”
On this track, Lauren explores what it's like to be a gender woman who has had to change herself in order to conform to predetermined ideas of how women “should” be, and celebrates their 10th anniversary last year. The film depicts Lauren grappling with the experience of appearing in public while serving as the frontman for CHVRCHES. Track from their debut album “The Bones Of What You Believe'').
“I feel like I'm acting in front of the public, but at the same time I feel like I'm playing a character in my inner experience, because there's so much negotiation that goes into my existence there. “Because it contains,” she commented. “How can I make people happy enough to let me do the creative work that I want to do? Because so much of the talk around the band is 'feminist', it can feel pretty fake and hypocritical at times. Yes, but my experience within the band wasn't that great. I feel like I've done all this work to make things work, but when you adapt yourself that way, it comes across as manipulative to get what you want. ”
This is the third song we've heard from her as a solo artist, following last year's debut ballad “Are You Awake?” And its sequel “Shame”.
