Uba Seo: Nisenan Arts & Culture in Nevada City will open its sixth exhibition, “Stories of Land, Water, and People,” starting March 16.
This exhibit, curated by Sherry Covert and Mila Clark, is part of the California Heritage: Indigenous Studies Project's Visibility Through Art initiative and is supported in part by the California Council on the Arts through the Upstate California Creative Corps program. Funded.
Uva Seo: Nisenan Art & Culture is a gallery and cultural space in downtown Nevada City focused on raising the profile and telling the story of the Nevada City Rancheria Nisenan Tribe.
Since opening in spring 2021, 'Uba Seo has been committed to creating enriching opportunities for awareness, advocacy, healing, and community education, curated through the perspectives and voices of Nisenan people .
“The goal is to create conscientious works of art that encourage dialogue about Nisenan history and culture,” said Sherry Covert, spokesperson for the Nevada City Rancheria Tribal Council and executive director of the Native American Research Project. he said. “We've been looking for a way to tell our collective story, and this seems to be working. Art is a great platform for having difficult conversations. Collaborating with local artists is fun. Our deepest desire is to bring awareness to local historical and current issues through the medium of art.”
Participating tribal artists include Shelley Covert, Ginger Covert, Lorena Davis, Sarah Thomas, Cindy Buero, Debra McBrien, Saxon Thomas, Tiffany Adams, Dearstin Madrone Suehed, Nikila Badua, Includes Maire Claire, Mila Clark, Jean-Michel Sawyer, and Ruth Chase.
This new screening will be on display until March 2025. The opening art reception will be held March 16 from 6-9:30 p.m., with opening speeches by Shelley Covert and artist speakers from 7-8:30 p.m.
Regular gallery hours are Thursday and Sunday from noon to 6 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. 'Uba Seo is located at 225 Broad St. in Nevada City. For more information, please visit ubaseo.org.
