Cornwall's coroner has called for so-called DIY suicide sites to be shut down. Emma Hilson, assistant coroner for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly, has written to the National Crime Agency and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology to take further action to shut down websites advertising ways for people to commit suicide. asked to do so.
Her Preventing Future Deaths report, dated January 31, builds on the recent inquest into the death of Guy Scotchford, who downloaded a 60-page step-by-step DIY guide. He then took his own life on July 1st last year. To end his life.
The inquest heard Mr Scotchford, who lived in Truro and Penzance during his lifetime, had long-standing mental health problems with chronic suicidal thoughts and believed he was suffering from a condition called mast cell activation syndrome. The reason for this has become clear. It was also heard that in the weeks leading up to his death, he revealed to his sister and his GP that he had researched methods of suicide and had made plans, but had no intention of carrying it out at that stage.

Last July, Mr Scotchford called his sister to tell her he loved her, but when he later tried to call her back, there was no answer. Concerned for his welfare, she called the police to take action, but when officers from Devon and Cornwall Police visited his property he was found dead.
A search of the property also uncovered a 60-page DIY suicide guide that Mr Scotchford had purchased online in April 2022.

In her report on preventing future deaths, Ms Hilson warned that the websites in question were still active and the information could still be downloaded. He said the website, which has not been named, provides direct links to companies offering products that can be bought and delivered in the UK.
Hilson writes: “It was clear from the investigators' evidence that the website was still active and that documents could be downloaded from this website. The police investigation revealed that this named company had indeed received and provided the orders. There was found.”
“The downloaded document contains step-by-step instructions on how to end your life, along with specific advice and instructions on the use of specific equipment.
“Investigators recently conducted an Internet search for this website, which is described as providing practical DIY information to help readers take control of their own lives and deaths. Anyone can access it online.”
She added: “In my opinion, action should be taken to prevent future deaths and your organizations (National Crime Agency and Department for Science, Innovation and Technology) have the power to take such action. I believe there is,” he added.
